eBook - Mental Health

The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that 20 million Americans are suffering from depression. That is a staggering number, but the organization also reports that 80% of people diagnosed with depression respond well to treatment. That is comforting to anyone that needs depression treatment for themselves or a loved one.

Depending on the severity of the depression, professional help may be required. Many people experience depressed moods that come and go. The duration of those feelings is what determines whether or not manic depression treatment is required. Manic depression has severe symptoms that require medical intervention. Treatment for depression includes prescription and non-prescription options. Some doctors choose to treat their patients with a combination of therapies. It is not uncommon for a physician to try several medications with a patient to discover which one works best.

Antidepressants work to balance the serotonin or dopamine in the body. Celexa, Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Prozac, Cymbalta, Effexor, Pristiq, Wellbutrin, Remeron and Viibryd are the most common medications prescribed for depression. The sole purpose of using drugs for manic depression treatment is to regulate chemical imbalances. Many patients also require psychotherapy. The therapy sessions may be in a group setting or in private one-on-one sessions with a licensed therapist. A patient should never abruptly stop taking medications or stop going to therapy. If there is a problem with a medication or if side effects are present, a physician should be notified immediately. Stopping a medication without consulting a doctor can result in psychosis or death. The abrupt stop of therapy sessions can cause a nervous breakdown.

Patients that suffer from depression should make an effort to lead healthy lives. Light and moderate exercise is encouraged. When possible, outdoor activity is encouraged. The exposure to the sun’s light rays has been known to help decrease depression. This is why indoor light therapy treatments are used as alternative therapies. The light therapy technique exposes patients to light, and the result is similar to being out in the sun. Good nutrition helps keeps the central nervous system operating at optimal levels. Alcohol, cigarettes, wheat, sugar, caffeine and dairy products should be used sparingly. If possible, patients should consider giving up cigarettes and alcohol altogether. A healthy lifestyle and the correct major depression disorder treatment plan allows patients with depression to live productive lives.
